We spend a lot of time working together, so I was surprised when Destiny (first pic, left) asked if we could have a Khana Thanksgiving. I’d planned on a break from the holiday following my father’s death earlier this year. But I felt a flutter of happiness as she organized a Sunday dinner and people stepped forward to embrace the idea. Steven from Belgium, who will become a citizen next year, volunteered to host and cook his first turkey. Clementine brought her great grandmother’s china and decorated the tables. Anjana and Soumen from India fried potato cutlets with spices and chillies and topped Kirby’s pumpkin pie with ice cream made with jaggery, a raw asian sugar. Brent made green bean casserole from scratch, not cans, Zack made his grandmother’s rosemary roll recipe, John made Turkish sausage and lentils, and Jackie from Mexico brought flan. Alden, Larkin, Rachel, Aldo, Sammi, Ariana, Hannah, Hattie, Abhijeet, and I rounded out the table with three types of stuffing, deviled eggs, mashed and sweet potatoes, macaroni and cheese, and ambrosia. So this year, instead of loss, I experienced a renewed sense of gratitude and an understanding that family is not only about blood, it’s about people you want to be with. And thanks to you, our wider Khana family, for dining with us on regular days and at special times, supporting the little community we’ve created in our restaurant. May each of you feel the spirit of Thanksgiving. 🍁 #unitedplatesofamerica #khanagiving #khanaindiangrill #fayettevillear
